Duck Day at the Flats is not just another family event – it’s a unique experience that’s always more fun than it’s quacked up to be.
“We have folks who attended as children who are now bringing their kids,” said Ailsa Wright, a Sooke Harbourside Lions Club member who organizes the annual event, now in its 16th year.
“It’s a hugely popular event that attracts people of all ages. We hear so many stories every year about how much fun it is, how people have been affected and touched, and how they interacted with the event.”
While many attendees purchase tickets to enter a plastic duck in the race, Wright said others come to mingle with friends, participate in children’s games and activities, or support local charitable organizations by visiting the concession stand for a hot dog.
Prizes for the first five ducks to waddle their way across the finish line range from $100 to $1,000.
The event will take place at the Flats at Sooke River Campground on May 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the duck race set to make a big splash at noon.
Raffle tickets for the race cost $5 each or $20 for five tickets. At the risk of ruffling a few feathers, organizers want to remind everyone that tickets sell out quickly every year.
